The Merkos Chinuch Office – Nova Southeastern University cooperative program ending on July 1st.
For six years Chabad mechanchim and mechanchos have had the opportunity to circumvent normative university requirement that all Masters Degree candidates have a prerequisite baccalaureate degree. Mechanchim and mechanchos who earned a Merkos Teachers License were allowed entry after creating a Career Portfolio of their educational experience. Nearly 100 educators have taken advantage in the Fischler Graduate School of Education of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Masters program since its inception.
NSU informed Rabbi Nochem Kaplan, who originally conceived of the cooperative program and has had a warm relationship with NSU, that the program will end as of July 1st. The Fischler School will grant an extension to students who submit Career Portfolios prior to July 1st 2010, for review and approval. Additionally, these students will have to begin their graduate studies within a twelve month period.
Potential graduate students have a small window of opportunity if they wish to take advantage of the NUS program. Rabbi Kaplan said though, that he has reason believes he will be able a similar arrangement with another University in the future.
